Key Stage 3

During years 7 and 8, we build the foundations for success at GCSE by providing the infrastructure for the ‘big’ ideas in science, along with developing practical investigation skills. 

Key Stage 4

We follow the AQA Trilogy specification. At the end of the course students will be awarded with two GCSE grades.

Biology

  • The structure and functioning of cells and how they divide by mitosis and meiosis
  • How variation occurs when gametes fuse at fertilisation from sexual and asexual reproduction
  • The two essential reactions for life on Earth - photosynthesis and respiration
  • Metabolism is the sum of all the reactions happening in a cell or organism in which molecules are made or broken down
  • All molecules are recycled between the living world and the environment to sustain life


Chemistry

  • That the periodic table provides chemists with a structured organisation of the known chemical elements to enable them to make sense of their physical and chemical properties
  • Theories of structure and bonding to explain the physical and chemical properties of materials
  • Analysis of structures to show that atoms can be arranged in a variety of ways, some of which are molecular while others are giant structures
  • Using quantitative analysis to determine the formulae of compounds and the equations for reactions; Energy changes in a chemical reactions
  • The interaction of particles involving the transferring of energy due to the breaking and formation of bonds; Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions
  • The chemistry of carbon compounds

  

Physics

  • The concept of energy
  • Electrical power
  • The particle model and its uses in predicting the behaviour of solids, liquids and gases and its many applications in everyday life
  • Ionising radiation and nuclear energy uses
  • Forces
  • Wave behaviour in both natural and man-made systems

Assessment

There are six examinations at the end of the course: two biology, two chemistry and two physics, each lasting 75 minutes. 

Extended KS4 Triple Option 

Students can choose to extend their knowledge and skill within science further by choosing the Triple science option, through which they will study each of the disciplines described above in more depth and with greater complexity. Students will be awarded three GCSE qualifications for each discipline; Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
