Better teaching has led to improved achievement, especially in mathematics.
Maths | The Dearne ALC

“The teaching of mathematics is effective. Most pupils make good progress in this subject.”

“In mathematics, for example, teachers routinely provide interesting problem-solving activities and probe pupils’ under-standing of mathematical knowledge so that pupils have to find solutions and solve problems.”

KS3 provision

Year 7 and 8 follow a mastery curriculum. Activities ensure that students gain a deep understanding of the mathematics they are learning, regardless of their ability. Students are required to think, discuss and share ideas rather than to just learn a procedure. This enables them to make connections, provide reasons and solve more challenging problems.

Mathematics | The Dearne ALC
We want all maths students at The Dearne ALC to learn the ‘why’ rather than just the ‘what’ and ‘how’.

KS4 provision

The GCSE course begins in Year 9. We use the AQA exam board. The curriculum has been divided into 51 teaching units. Groups follow either core, advanced or expert pathways, depending on their target grades.

Year 11 students receive intensive examination preparation through ‘Session 6’, ‘Food for Thought’ and Tutor Time additional provision.
